After more than thirty years in healthcare and more than twenty of those in leadership, I have learned that the tools we need to be successful are found in what is really uncommon sense.
The biggest change to my career was when I became a patient after an elective surgery went wrong. After 6 months of recuperation during which I experienced sepsis, a wound vac, physical therapy, home health, 4 surgeries (2 of them emergent) and 2 non-emergent surgeries, I have come out on the other side with a renewed passion for patient care and the care of their families. In my presentations, I share how my experiences have impacted patient care, how you can deliver excellent patient care through the eyes of your patients and their families, and how as a leader, you can deliver that same level of empathy to your staff.
